Moon sign calculator
Enter your birth date and place, and a time if you have one. You get your Moon sign at once, and if the Moon changed sign on the day you were born, both signs and the minute it moved.
What your Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the sign of the zodiac the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. Where your Sun sign describes what you are working towards, the Moon describes what you need: how you react before you have had time to think, what calms you down, what home has to feel like. Astrologers often find it describes a person more closely than the Sun sign does, because it speaks to the private, everyday self rather than the one on show.
It is one of your big three, with the Sun and the rising sign, and it is usually the second placement an astrologer reads.
Why the Moon needs more care than the Sun
The Sun takes a month to cross a sign. The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day and crosses a sign in two to two and a half days. Across births from 1930 to 2010, the Moon changed sign during the calendar day on 44 days in every hundred. If you were born on one of those days and do not know your birth time, nobody can give you one Moon sign for certain, and a calculator that gives you one without saying so is guessing.
StarMap checks where the Moon was at the first and last minute of your birth date, in your birthplace's own time. If the sign was the same at both ends, your Moon sign is settled, time or no time. If it changed, you see both signs and the local time the Moon crossed over, so you can decide with whatever you know. A parent's memory of morning or evening is often enough.
With a birth time you get one sign and its degree. If the Moon changed sign within an hour of the time you gave, the result says so, since recorded times are often rounded.
How the calculation works
Your birth date and time are converted to Universal Time with the historical time-zone rules for your birthplace. StarMap then computes the Moon's position with astronomy-engine, an open-source ephemeris, and places it in the tropical zodiac, the one Western astrology uses, where each sign is a 30-degree slice counted from the March equinox. Positions agree with the Swiss Ephemeris to within about one arcminute, which for the Moon is about two minutes of time.
What to do with your answer
Read the description under your result and notice what fits and what does not; a Moon sign describes tendencies, not a verdict. Then set it beside your Sun. A fire Sun with a water Moon, for example, often describes someone who moves fast in public and feels things deeply in private. Your whole chart shows the aspects your Moon makes to the other planets, which colour it further, and the sky today shows which sign the Moon is in now.
Questions people ask
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Often, yes. On more than half of all days the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and the calculator will tell you your Moon sign is settled. On the other days it shows the two signs and the time the Moon changed, and your birth time decides.
What is the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?
Your Sun sign comes from where the Sun was, which changes about once a month; it is the sign people mean when they ask yours. Your Moon sign comes from where the Moon was, which changes every two or three days. Astrologers read the Sun as your direction and the Moon as your needs and moods.
Why does another site give me a different Moon sign?
Usually because the Moon changed sign on your birth date and the other site assumed a time, often noon, without telling you, or because the birth time was read in the wrong time zone. Check the time zone shown under the place you chose. Sidereal (Vedic) astrology gives a different answer too, because its zodiac sits about 23 to 24 degrees behind the tropical one.
What does my Moon sign say about me?
It describes your emotional habits: how you comfort yourself, what you need from the people close to you, and how you react when you are caught off guard. The reading under your result is written for your sign; your whole chart adds the planets your Moon talks to and, with a birth time, the house it falls in.
Is my Moon sign the same as the Moon's phase when I was born?
No. The phase is the angle between the Sun and the Moon; the sign is the part of the zodiac the Moon was in. At the exact moment of a full Moon, for example, the Moon is always in the sign opposite the Sun.
