Your birth data is yours.
This page says, in plain language, what StarMap collects, what it does with it, and how you get it deleted. It applies to starmap.com and the StarMap emails and notifications.
What we collect
- Birth details: date, time and place, when you enter them to draw a chart. Without an account they are used to compute the chart in that request and are not stored in StarMap’s database. The picture of your birth sky on the chart page is fetched from an address that carries the birth details (and, on the print page, the name you type), so our host, Vercel, keeps that picture in its cache for up to 30 days and the address in its request logs for its own log period. Your browser keeps them in the open tab (session storage) so the next page can use them; they go when the tab closes. With an account they are stored so your chart, daily reading and compatibility list can be shown again.
- Sign-in: when you ask to sign in or to save a chart, StarMap emails you a one-time link and a six-digit code. If you had drawn a chart, its birth details are held with your email address until you open the link, so the chart can be saved from any browser, and for no more than seven days.
- Account details: your email address and when you confirmed it, an optional first name, your time zone, your email and notification preferences and, if you allow notifications, the address your browser’s push service gives StarMap for sending them.
- Other people’s birth details you enter for compatibility. Enter them only with that person’s knowledge; they are stored on your account and deleted with it.
- Payment: handled by Stripe. StarMap never sees your card number. We store your Stripe customer id and subscription status. When you buy something made from a chart, or join StarMap Plus with a chart you drew and did not leave out, the chart’s birth details go to Stripe with the checkout, so it can be made or saved to your account the moment the payment arrives. Stripe keeps them in its record of that checkout.
- Checkouts: a record of each checkout you open (what it was for, your address once known, and where your visit came from), so sales can be counted and an unfinished checkout can be reminded once. For a checkout left unfinished without an account, Stripe tells StarMap the address you typed only if you ticked its box agreeing to promotional email.
- One-time purchases, such as the full written reading or the digital star map, need no account. We keep the email address you paid with, the birth details and any name the product is made from, and the private link it lives at. If you have an account with the same address, the purchase is listed on your account page. Anyone who has the link can open the page, so share it only with people you mean to.
- Orders: for prints, the shipping name and address you give at checkout.
- Messages: what you send through the contact page (your name, email address, subject and message), and feedback you leave on readings.
- How the site is used: StarMap keeps its own record of the steps that matter to it, such as a chart drawn, a sign-in asked for, a chart saved, the Plus page seen, a checkout started or a purchase made, and which email a click came from. The record also includes which StarMap links and buttons were pressed and the words typed into the star search. Each record holds the kind of step, the page, a random id for your browser, where your visit came from (the referring site and any campaign tags in the link) and, when you are signed in, your account. It never holds birth details or the text of a message. Records are deleted after 400 days; if you delete your account first, their link to your account is removed at once.
- Page views and speed: page views and basic device information through Vercel Analytics, and page load times through Vercel Speed Insights. Neither uses cookies or follows you across sites.
What we use it for
- Computing and showing your chart, readings, compatibility, the full reading, the star map and the print.
- Sending emails and notifications. Always sent, because each is part of something you asked for: sign-in links and codes; receipts for orders and purchases, which include the private link to what you bought, your gift code, and a second email when a print ships; and, for members, the welcome to Plus and a note if a payment does not go through or a second payment was returned. Sent only while you want them: the welcome emails after you save a chart; up to two reminders to draw your chart if you have an account without one; the morning reading, which starts when you save your chart; the weekly outlook on Mondays and the monthly letter on the 1st; up to two reminders before the founding price for StarMap Plus closes; if you are a monthly member, one note before renewal about the annual plan; one note when a membership ends; one reminder about a checkout you leave unfinished, at most one a week; if you joined the waitlist, the email saying StarMap is open; and the morning notification, if you allow notifications in your browser.
- Every email in the second group has a link to stop it, and mail apps that support it also offer a one-click unsubscribe. Emails to an account also link to your email preferences: your account page has a switch for each kind, the daily email; the weekly outlook and monthly letter; and news and offers, which covers the welcome emails, the reminders and the offers. A checkout reminder sent without an account has a link that stops checkout reminders to that address; we keep the address on a list of addresses not to remind, so the request keeps being honoured.
- Answering you when you write to us.
- Running the membership: billing, referrals, gift codes.
- Knowing which pages and links bring people to StarMap and where they stop, so we can fix what does not work.
- Improving the readings from the feedback left on them.
We do not sell personal data, do not share birth data with advertisers, and do not use your data to train models.
Keeping the service safe
Forms that make StarMap send an email (sign-in, the contact page) are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a person is using them. To stop floods of requests, StarMap counts them using a salted digest of your IP address, which cannot be turned back into the address; those counts are deleted after two days.
Who else sees it
The services that run StarMap, each under its own contract: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting, analytics and speed measurement), Stripe (payments), Resend (email), Cloudflare (the Turnstile check on forms), Open-Meteo (place search: only the place name you type is sent), and the print vendor (name, address and the print file, for print orders only).
Two more see your browser’s IP address, as any website you load something from does. Celebrity photographs are shown straight from Wikimedia Commons, which hosts them, so your browser fetches each one from Wikimedia’s servers. If you allow notifications, they reach you through your browser maker’s push service (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft, depending on the browser), which carries the notification text.
How long we keep it
Account data for as long as you have an account. Delete the account from your account page and everything tied to it, including saved birth details and compatibility people, is removed immediately. A reading or star map you bought, and a print order, are not: each keeps the birth details and any name it was made from, no longer linked to your account, so a private link you bought keeps working. To have those removed as well, write to us through the contact page (choose “My data”). Stripe’s own records of your payments and checkouts, including any birth details sent with a checkout, are kept by Stripe under its own policy and are not deleted with the account; Stripe keeps invoices for as long as the law requires. Purchase, order and checkout records are kept as records of the sale. An address that stopped checkout reminders stays on the list of addresses not to remind until you ask us to remove it. The usage record is deleted after 400 days and a pending sign-in after seven days. Contact messages are kept so they can be answered and followed up, and deleted when you ask. Waitlist addresses are deleted when you leave the waitlist from the link in its email, or when you ask.
Your rights
You can see what we hold on your account page, change it there, and delete it there. If you are in the EU, UK, California or anywhere else with a data-protection law, you also have the right to a copy of your data and to complain to your regulator. For a copy, or anything the account page does not do, write to us through the contact page (choose “My data”); we will respond within 30 days.
Cookies and browser storage
- Sign-in: a session cookie keeps you signed in.
- starmap_vid: a random id for this browser, so visits can be counted without knowing who you are. 400 days, renewed on each visit.
- starmap_src: where your first visit came from (the page you landed on, the referring site, campaign tags). 400 days, renewed on each visit.
- starmap_last: the same for your latest visit from somewhere else. 90 days.
- starmap_ref: the referral code in a link someone shared with you. 30 days.
- starmap_px: which price group you are in during a price test. StarMap’s server sets and signs it, only while a test is running, so you are shown the same price each visit. An earlier version of the page also wrote an unsigned value under this name, which your browser may still hold; it sets no price. 90 days.
- starmap_checkout: set when you open a checkout, so that after paying only the browser that opened it is signed in. 24 hours.
- Session storage in the open tab: the chart you just drew (and, on the Plus page, whether you left it out of a purchase), so the next page can use it; and which page of this site you came from and the last StarMap button you pressed, so a visit is counted once. It goes when the tab closes.
There are no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

StarMap is for people 16 and over. We do not knowingly keep accounts for anyone younger; tell us and we will delete it.
