Venus sign calculator
Your Venus sign from your birth date and place, with what it says about how you love and what you value. A birth time is rarely needed.
What your Venus sign describes
Venus is the planet astrologers read for affection, pleasure and taste: how you show love, what you find beautiful, what you want a relationship to feel like, and what you give your attention to purely for the joy of it. Your Venus sign is simply the sign Venus occupied at your birth. It says less about who you fall for than about how you behave when you do.
It is often read beside your Mars sign, which describes desire and pursuit. When two charts are compared, the contacts between one person's Venus and the other person's planets are among the first things astrologers look for.
Venus and your Sun sign
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs either side of it. Across births from 1930 to 2010, about a quarter have Venus in the Sun sign, nearly six in ten have it one sign away, and fewer than one in five have it two signs away. A Gemini can have Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo, and never in Sagittarius.
That closeness is why your result names your Sun sign too. A Venus in the same sign as the Sun tends to make what you love part of how you see yourself; a Venus a sign or two away brings a different taste into the picture.
When the time matters, and retrograde Venus
Venus usually spends three and a half to four and a half weeks in a sign, and changes sign on only about one day in thirty, so for most people the birth date settles it. If Venus changed sign on your birth date, the calculator shows both signs and the local time of the change, and your birth time decides.
About every nineteen months Venus appears to move backwards through the zodiac for around six weeks, and in those years it can stay in one sign for up to four months. About seven births in a hundred have Venus retrograde, and your answer says whether yours was. Astrologers tend to read it as affection that is slower to show and more reflective, with a liking for the familiar over the new.
How it is calculated
Venus is placed where it appeared from Earth at the moment of your birth, allowing for the minutes its light took to reach us. Your birth time is first turned into Universal Time using the clock history of your birthplace; astronomy-engine, an open-source ephemeris, gives the position, which is set in the tropical zodiac and matches the Swiss Ephemeris to about an arcminute. With no birth time, the calculator looks at Venus at the first and last minute of your birth date and calls the sign settled only if it held all day. For the house Venus sits in and the aspects it forms, open your whole chart.
Questions people ask
Do I need my birth time to find my Venus sign?
Rarely. Venus changes sign on about one day in thirty; on every other day the date is enough. If it changed on yours, the result shows both signs and the time of the change.
What is the difference between my Venus sign and my Sun sign?
The Sun sign describes your core direction and how you shine; the Venus sign describes how you love, enjoy and choose. Because Venus stays close to the Sun, the two are often the same sign or neighbours.
What does it mean if Venus was retrograde when I was born?
That Venus appeared to move backwards from Earth, which happens for about six weeks every nineteen months. It is not a flaw. Astrologers read it as a more private, reflective way of loving and valuing, often with a taste for the old and the proven.
Can my Venus sign tell me who I am compatible with?
Not on its own. It describes what you bring and what you respond to. Compatibility in astrology compares two whole charts, including how each person's Venus meets the other's Sun, Moon and Mars; the compatibility calculator does that for any two births.
