Aries

Aries is the Sun sign of anyone born while the Sun is in Aries: in 2026, from 20 March 2026, 14:45 UTC to 20 April 2026, 01:39 UTC. The dates move by up to a day from year to year, so a birthday at either end needs the year, and sometimes the hour, to settle its sign. The Sun is next in Aries from 20 March 2027.

Aries is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars; its symbol is the ram. Astrologers read it for the way it goes first. Of the 6,194 well-known people in StarMap's dataset, 532 have the Sun in Aries for the whole of their birth date; Lady Gaga, Akira Kurosawa and Rafael Orozco Maestre are among them. 34 more were born on a day the Sun entered or left Aries and are left out, because the hour decides and StarMap has no birth time for them.

Lady Gaga and Akira Kurosawa were both born with the Sun in Aries. Is your Sun in Aries?Draw your birth chart, free: your Sun, Moon and rising sign from the real sky

Born on the edge: 20 March and 20 April

20 March, the first day of Aries season this year, is shared with Pisces. Since 1900, the Sun was in Aries all day in 0 years, in Pisces all day in 60, and changed sign during the day in 67, when the hour and place of birth decide.
20 April, the last day of Aries season this year, is shared with Taurus. Since 1900, the Sun was in Aries all day in 11 years, in Taurus all day in 20, and changed sign during the day in 96, when the hour and place of birth decide.

The three decans of Aries in 2026

Astrologers divide each sign into three decans of ten degrees, and read the second and third as coloured by the other two fire signs (Leo and Sagittarius). The Sun takes about ten days to cross each.

Aries traits

Aries goes first. The sign is read for initiative: the impulse to start, to say the thing nobody else will say, and to find out by doing rather than by planning. An Aries Sun tends to be direct to the point of bluntness, quick to anger and quick to forget it, and more comfortable leading a charge than holding a position. Boredom is the real enemy; a long, slow project with no visible progress is where the energy leaks away.

The shadow side is the same quality overdone: impatience with other people's pace, a habit of leaving things three-quarters finished once the novelty wears off, and a competitiveness that can turn an ordinary conversation into a contest. Astrologers describe the work of the sign as learning to finish what the spark began, and to notice that other people were also in the room.

Aries in love

In love, Aries pursues. Interest is shown early and plainly, the chase matters, and the sign is at its best with a partner who can hold their own rather than one who gives way. What it needs to learn is patience: desire arrives before tenderness, and the relationship lasts when the second catches up with the first.

Aries at work

At work, Aries is the one who volunteers before the question is finished. The sign suits roles with a clear start, a visible result and some room to compete: sport, emergency work, selling, founding things. It struggles with committees and with being managed closely. Given a problem and left alone, it usually comes back with something.

What people get wrong: that Aries is all aggression. The sign's anger is real but short, and the quality underneath it is courage, the willingness to be the first one through the door. A quiet Aries, and there are many, still has it; it shows as decisiveness rather than noise.

A Sun sign is one placement of ten. The Moon, the rising sign and the planets change how it plays out: a Aries Sun with a Libra Moon reads differently from one with the Moon in Aries too. Draw your whole chart to see yours.

Aries and the other signs

Same element (fire): Leo and Sagittarius, a trine apart, read as the signs that understand Aries without trying.
Opposite: Libra, six months away, read as the sign Aries is drawn to and argues with.
Same modality (cardinal): Cancer and Capricorn, a square apart, the friction that gets things done.
Two signs either side: Gemini and Aquarius, a sextile apart, easy company of a different kind.

Aries with every sign, each pairing with the famous couples who have it: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.

Sun signs are the roughest measure of two people. Compare two whole charts for the aspects between them.

Questions people ask

What are the Aries dates?

In 2026 the Sun is in Aries from 20 March 2026, 14:45 UTC to 20 April 2026, 01:39 UTC. Most years it enters on 20 March or the day either side and leaves on 20 April or the day either side; the table above gives the minute for each year. A birthday on one of those edge days needs the year, and sometimes the time and place of birth, to settle its sign.

Is 20 March a Aries or a Pisces?

Not always. 20 March is the first day of Aries season in 2026, but the Sun's sign on that date depends on the year: of the 127 years from 1900 to 2026, in 60 it was in Pisces all day and in 67 it entered Aries during the day, so the hour and the place of birth decide. The birthday page for 20 March lists every year.

Is 20 April a Aries or a Taurus?

Not always. 20 April is the last day of Aries season in 2026, but the Sun's sign on that date depends on the year: of the 127 years from 1900 to 2026, in 11 the Sun was in Aries all day, in 20 it was in Taurus all day and in 96 it left Aries for Taurus during the day, so the hour and the place of birth decide. The birthday page for 20 April lists every year.

What planet rules Aries?

Mars. The ruler is read as the sign's manner: where Mars sits in a Aries Sun's own chart colours how the sign shows.

What element is Aries?

Fire, with Leo and Sagittarius: the three fire signs sit a third of the zodiac apart and are read as easy company for one another. Aries is also cardinal, like Cancer and Capricorn and Libra, which share its way of acting and are read as the signs it rubs against.

Which famous people are Aries?

Lady Gaga, Akira Kurosawa, Rafael Orozco Maestre, Jackie Chan and Celine Dion all have the Sun in Aries. StarMap lists 532 well-known Aries Suns, each with a birth chart computed from their birth date and place.

Are Aries men and Aries women different?

Not in the chart: astrology reads the Sun in Aries the same way whatever a person's gender. What people describe as the Aries man is usually Mars in a chart, how someone pursues what they want, and the Aries woman Venus or the Moon, how they love and what they need; each has its own page for Aries, with the famous people who have it.

Aries horoscopes

Dates are computed from the Sun’s position with the astronomy-engine ephemeris, checked against Swiss Ephemeris, in the tropical zodiac. Birth data comes from Wikidata; a person is listed only when the Sun was in Aries for the whole of their birth date. Readings describe tendencies, for entertainment and self-reflection; StarMap predicts nothing. All twelve signs.
