Libra

Libra is the Sun sign of anyone born while the Sun is in Libra: in 2026, from 23 September 2026, 00:06 UTC to 23 October 2026, 09:38 UTC. The dates move by up to a day from year to year, so a birthday at either end needs the year, and sometimes the hour, to settle its sign. The Sun is next in Libra from 23 September 2027.

Libra is a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus; its symbol is the scales. Astrologers read it for the way it balances. Of the 6,194 well-known people in StarMap's dataset, 517 have the Sun in Libra for the whole of their birth date; Jimmy Carter, John Lennon and Eminem are among them. 41 more were born on a day the Sun entered or left Libra and are left out, because the hour decides and StarMap has no birth time for them.

Jimmy Carter and John Lennon were both born with the Sun in Libra. Is your Sun in Libra?Draw your birth chart, free: your Sun, Moon and rising sign from the real sky

Born on the edge: 23 September and 23 October

23 September, the first day of Libra season this year, is shared with Virgo. Since 1900, the Sun was in Libra all day in 23 years, in Virgo all day in 8, and changed sign during the day in 96, when the hour and place of birth decide.
23 October, the last day of Libra season this year, is shared with Scorpio. Since 1900, the Sun was in Libra all day in 36 years, in Scorpio all day in 3, and changed sign during the day in 88, when the hour and place of birth decide.

The three decans of Libra in 2026

Astrologers divide each sign into three decans of ten degrees, and read the second and third as coloured by the other two air signs (Aquarius and Gemini). The Sun takes about ten days to cross each.

Libra traits

Libra balances. The sign is read for fairness, partnership and taste: a wish for harmony, an instinct for the other point of view, and an eye for what looks and feels right. A Libra Sun tends to be charming, diplomatic, uncomfortable with open conflict and happier in a pair than alone.

The shadow side is the scales swinging: indecision, people-pleasing, a peace kept at the cost of honesty, and a dependence on others' approval. Astrologers describe the sign's work as learning that choosing a side is sometimes the fair thing to do.

Libra in love

In love, Libra is made for partnership and knows it. It is attentive, considerate and romantic, and it can lose itself in the other person while trying to keep the peace. Its lesson is that a relationship with two whole people in it is more balanced than one with one person bending.

Libra at work

At work, Libra is the mediator and the one with taste: design, advocacy, diplomacy, counselling, anything where people must be brought to agree. It works well in partnership and less well when forced to decide alone and fast. Ugly surroundings bother it more than it admits.

What people get wrong: that Libra is shallow. The liking for beauty and harmony is the surface of a serious concern with fairness, and the sign will argue a point of justice long after the easygoing manner has suggested it would let it go. Indecision is the cost of seeing every side; it is not indifference.

A Sun sign is one placement of ten. The Moon, the rising sign and the planets change how it plays out: a Libra Sun with a Aries Moon reads differently from one with the Moon in Libra too. Draw your whole chart to see yours.

Libra and the other signs

Same element (air): Aquarius and Gemini, a trine apart, read as the signs that understand Libra without trying.
Opposite: Aries, six months away, read as the sign Libra is drawn to and argues with.
Same modality (cardinal): Capricorn and Cancer, a square apart, the friction that gets things done.
Two signs either side: Sagittarius and Leo, a sextile apart, easy company of a different kind.

Questions people ask

What are the Libra dates?

In 2026 the Sun is in Libra from 23 September 2026, 00:06 UTC to 23 October 2026, 09:38 UTC. Most years it enters on 23 September or the day either side and leaves on 23 October or the day either side; the table above gives the minute for each year. A birthday on one of those edge days needs the year, and sometimes the time and place of birth, to settle its sign.

Is 23 September a Libra or a Virgo?

Not always. 23 September is the first day of Libra season in 2026, but the Sun's sign on that date depends on the year: of the 127 years from 1900 to 2026, in 23 the Sun was in Libra all day, in 8 it was in Virgo all day and in 96 it entered Libra during the day, so the hour and the place of birth decide. The birthday page for 23 September lists every year.

Is 23 October a Libra or a Scorpio?

Not always. 23 October is the last day of Libra season in 2026, but the Sun's sign on that date depends on the year: of the 127 years from 1900 to 2026, in 36 the Sun was in Libra all day, in 3 it was in Scorpio all day and in 88 it left Libra for Scorpio during the day, so the hour and the place of birth decide. The birthday page for 23 October lists every year.

What planet rules Libra?

Venus. The ruler is read as the sign's manner: where Venus sits in a Libra Sun's own chart colours how the sign shows.

What element is Libra?

Air, with Aquarius and Gemini: the three air signs sit a third of the zodiac apart and are read as easy company for one another. Libra is also cardinal, like Capricorn and Cancer and Aries, which share its way of acting and are read as the signs it rubs against.

Which famous people are Libra?

Jimmy Carter, John Lennon, Eminem, Silvio Berlusconi and Brigitte Bardot all have the Sun in Libra. StarMap lists 517 well-known Libra Suns, each with a birth chart computed from their birth date and place.

Are Libra men and Libra women different?

Not in the chart: astrology reads the Sun in Libra the same way whatever a person's gender. What people describe as the Libra man is usually Mars in a chart, how someone pursues what they want, and the Libra woman Venus or the Moon, how they love and what they need; each has its own page for Libra, with the famous people who have it.

Libra horoscopes

Dates are computed from the Sun’s position with the astronomy-engine ephemeris, checked against Swiss Ephemeris, in the tropical zodiac. Birth data comes from Wikidata; a person is listed only when the Sun was in Libra for the whole of their birth date. Readings describe tendencies, for entertainment and self-reflection; StarMap predicts nothing. All twelve signs.
